AVERT - AVoidance algorithms Extended development and Realistic Testing
Project Summary
AVoidance algorithms Extended development and Realistic testing (AVERT)
is an ongoing project contracted by European Space Agency (ESA), performed
in the scope of the Mars Robotic Exploration Preparation Programme
(MREP-2) and aimed at being an intermediate step towards the goal
which is to effectively aid the future landing of an autonomous vehicle
in Mars.
In the context of the original project, FUSION (http://www.ca3-uninova.org/project_fusion),
several solutions for fusing data coming from different terrain sensors
were developed: Hybrid Hazard Detection and Avoidance (H2DAS), Intelligent
Planetary Site selection (IPSIS) and Hybrid Reasoning Fusion (HRF)
- Hazard Detection and Avoidance (HDA) algorithms. Within AVERT, two
of the HDA algorithms (H2DAS and IPSIS) are intended to be further
developed, implemented in real-time and hardware-accelerated by using
Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) alongside the processing system.
In the end, flight-test validation of the HDA subsystems will be done
in a relevant environment.
