SolATIC - Solar Activity Tracking and Characterization
PhD Research Project
Solar manifestations such as sunspots, filaments, coronal bright points, coronal mass ejections and solar flares are good indicators of solar activity. This research aims to develop techniques for analyzing solar data, namely solar full disk images, and to develop a framework for identification, characterization and tracking solar features. The framework is being developed in a modular way to increase its extendibility and reusability. Currently the focus is on general image processing modules for solar images as well as modules for sunspots and coronal bright points (CBPs). This research puts a special emphasis on tracking solar features, and proposes solutions using evolutionary algorithms (e.g. hybrid of swarm intelligence and snake model algorithms) and fuzzy sets theory. After solar features are detected, the corresponding modules calculate their characterizations such as shape, area, chirality, speed and coordination. The tracking module is responsible for tracing the solar features throughout their life span.
